Sometimes, there may not be anyone to answer the telephone and you will need to leave a message. Follow this outline to make sure that the person who should receive your message has all the information he/she needs.

في بعض الأحيان ، قد لا يكون هناك أي شخص للرد على الهاتف ، وسوف تحتاج إلى ترك رسالة. اتبع هذه الخطوات للتأكد من أن الشخص الذي سيتلقى الرسالة لديه كل المعلومات التى يحتاجها.

1. Introductionالمقدمة - - - - Hello, this is Ken. OR Hello, My name is Ken Beare (more formal). 
2. State the time of day and your reason for callingوضح الوقت و سبب الاتصال - - - - - It's ten in the morning. I'm phoning (calling, ringing) to find out if ... / to see if ... / to let you know that ... / to tell you that ...
3. Make a request اطلب طلبا- - - - Could you call (ring, telephone) me back? / Would you mind ... ? /
4. Leave your telephone number اترك رقم هاتفك- - - - My number is .... / You can reach me at .... / Call me at ...
5. Finishانهى المكالمة - - - - Thanks a lot, bye. / I'll talk to you later, bye.

Telephone English - Important Phrases

There are a number of phrases and idioms that are only used when telephoning. Let's first take a look at an example dialogue: Here are the most common:

• Operator: Hello, Frank and Brothers, How can I help you?

• Peter: This is Peter Jackson calling, is Bob in?
• Frank: I'm afraid he's out at the moment. Can I take a message?
• Peter: Yes, Could you ask him to call me at . I need to talk to him about the Nuovo line, it's urgent.
• Frank: Could you repeat the number please?
• Peter: Yes, that's , and this is Peter Jackson.
• Frank: Thank you Mr Jackson, I'll make sure Bob gets this asap.
• Peter: Thanks, bye.

As you can see, the language is rather informal and there are some important differences to everyday English. Look at the chart below for key language and phrases used in telephone English:

I'm afraid ... is not available at the moment
The line is busy... (when the extension requested is being used)
Mr Jackson isn't in... Mr Jackson is out at the moment...

Common present time expressions include:التعبيرات التى تستخدم فى زمن المضارع البسيط

usually, always, often, sometimes, on Saturdays, at weekends (on weekends US English), rarely, on occasion, never, seldom

Structureتكوين المضارع البسيط

Positiveفى صيغة الايجاب

In the positive form add an 's' to the base form of the 3rd person singular. If the verb ends in -y preceded by a consonant, change the -y to -ies.

I, You, We, They -> eat lunch at noon.

He, She, It -> works well in any situation.

Negativeفى صيغة النفى

Conjugate the helping verb 'do' not (don't and doesn't) the base form of the verb to make negatives.

I, You, We, They -> don't enjoy opera.

He, She, It -> doesn't belong to the club.

Questionsفى صيغة السؤال

Conjugate the helping verb 'do' (do or does) the base form of the verb in question forms.

Do -> I, you, we, they -> work in this town?

Does -> he, she, it -> live in this city?

هناك مجموعات كثيرة ومهمة من الافعال فى اللغة الانجليزية تأتى مع أسماء وعبارات معينة. هذه القائمة تضم أهم التعبيرات التى تأتى مع كل فعل ليكونا تعبيرا معينا:

Take actionيتخذ اجراء/ رد فعل  

Definition: To do something in order to achieve an objective

التعريف : فعل شيئ من أجل تحقيق هدف

Ex: We need to take action to solve this problem. 

Ex: You'll have to take action in order to change the political system.

Take a bath / showerيأخذ حماما/يستحم

Definition: To have a bath / shower

Ex: Jack took a shower before he left for work.
Ex: Susan enjoys taking a long, hot bath on Saturdays.

Take a breakيأخذ راحة/يستريح

Definition: To make a short pause at work, or when working on something at home

Ex: Let's take a short break and then finish the job.
Ex: Why don't you take a ten minute break?

Take the bus / subway / trainيأخذ الاتوبيس او القطار

Definition: To get on public transport

Ex: Jane takes the subway to work every morning.
Ex: Which train should I take to get to Long Island?

Take a (phone) callيستقبل مكالمة هاتفية

Definition: To agree to speak with someone on the telephone call

Ex: I'll take that call, can you put her through?
Ex: Would you like to take this call Mr. Smith?

Take a chanceيستغل الفرصة

Definition: To do something that might be successful or not

Ex: Take a chance and apply for that new position.
Ex: He doesn't like taking chances.

Take classيأخذ كورسا/درسا

Definition: To sign up and attend a course in school, or other instructional institution

Ex: She needs to take two more classes to graduate.
Ex: I'd love to take a yoga class.

Take controlيتحكم فى / يسيطر على

Definition: To become in charge of a situation

Ex: We'll let Tim take control of the situation.
Ex: I'd like you to take control of the vehicle.

Take a dislike to somebodyيبدأ فى كره شخص

Definition: To begin to not like someone

Ex: I've taken a dislike to John. He's not honest.
Ex: Have you taken a dislike to Anna?

Take an examيمتحن/يأخذ اختبارا

Definition: To take an important test

Ex: Bob took an exam last Friday.

Ex: Do you have any exams to take next week?

Take a guessيخمن

Definition: To guess

Ex: Would you like me to take a guess at how much you weigh?
Ex: Let me take a guess. You're getting married!

Take a vacation / holidayيأخذ اجازة

Definition: To go on vacation

Ex: We took a vacation to Hawaii.
Ex: Ann is going to take a holiday next Saturday.

Take an interest in somethingيهتم ب

Definition: To become interested in something

Ex: Henry took an interest in helping little Johnny.
Ex: I didn't know you had taken an interest in knitting.

Take the leadيكون مسؤلا عن شئ ما

Definition: To become responsible for something

Ex: I'd like to take the lead on this next project.
Ex: Mary took the lead and began the meeting with a presentation.

Definition: To investigate, or review something

Ex:Could you take a look at this question?
Ex: I'd like to take a look. Is that OK?

Take medicineيأخذ الدواء

Definition: To ingest medicine

Ex: Be sure to take your medicine before you eat lunch.
Ex: Many senior citizens take medicine three or four times a day.

Take notesيأخذ ملحوظات

Definition: To write notes during a presentation or other learning situation

Ex: I'm going to take notes on the lecture.
Ex: Can you take notes and share them with me?

Take a riskيجازف

Definition: To take a chance on something that might be successful or not

Ex: He's going to take a risk and moved to Chicago.
Ex: We took a risk and bought the property as an investment.

Take someone's temperatureيقيس حرارة شخص ما

Definition: To measure a person's temperature

Ex: Tom took his son's temperature to see if he should stay home.
Ex: Do you think I should take my temperature?

Take a walkيتمشى

Definition: To go for a walk

Ex: Let's take a walk around the lake.
Ex: I take a walk with my dog every day.

To get information in English, we can use words such as how, why, where, when, who, which, and what. These words are called WH words. Listen for the 'WH' words in the dialogue.

Hello, I am planning a trip to New York City, and I need some information.

Yes, when will you be arriving?

On April 1st. How can I get to Manhattan from the airport?

You can take M60.
